60% glaucoma patients become blind

“I advise everybody who is already over 40 to visit an ophthalmologist, said Sergey Rykov, Chief Ophthalmologist of MHU, Head of the Centre of microsurgery of eye. This is a favourite age for glaucoma. Due to it optic nerve dies and a man goes blind. Glaucoma is insidious, because it is painless and practically asymptomatic.

Main reason of eyesight disability is injuries, but such people get the 3rd disability group, and 60% of people, who were diagnosed glaucoma for the first time, have such a neglected form of the disease that patients go blind or become poor seeing and get  the 1st disability group at once."

Nearly 200,000 patients with this disease are registrants. Annually nearly one million people go blind due to glaucoma worldwide. In England, for example, 38 billion  pound a year are allocated for treatment of this disease and only four of them are provided for treatment, others - for prophylaxis and social requirements of people, having become blind due to glaucoma.
