Children, having conceived as a result of extracorporal fertilization (ECF), more frequently suffer of congenital defects.

According to American scientists, such children two-four times more frequently have harelip (cleft lip), atrial septal and ventricular septum defects, as well as development defects of gastrointestinal tract.

Scientists of US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) under the guidance of Jennita Reefhuis compared prevalence of 30 the most frequent congenital defects in children having been conceived normally or with the help of artificial fertilization (ECF or ICSI - intracytoplasmic sperm injection into an ovule). 281 test-tube babies were involved in the research and nearly 14,000 children having been conceived normally. At that all pregnancies were semelparous.

It turned out that children having been conceived "in vitro" were born 2.4 times more frequently with harelip. Atrial septal and ventricular septum defects were registered in them 2.1 times more frequently than in children having been conceived normally. Moreover, such children had development defects of gastrointestinal tract more frequently: congenital esophageal obstruction - 4.5 times more frequently, rectum atresia - 3.7 times more frequently, scientists reported.
