Ukrainian children are fed with sugar for breakfast

Consumers International (CI) appealed to the World Health Organization with a request to forbid trading unhealthy meal for children worldwide via the international rule system.

Popular today dry breakfasts are extraordinarily insalubrious for children, experts of CI assert.

"We have conducted a research embracing 32 countries and concentrated our attention on 13 kinds of the biggest-selling breakfasts at the present moment of such trade marks, as Kellogg's, Nestle - said Deputy Director of Consumers International Bjarne Pedersen. - And it has appeared that the research results fully differ from results provided by a company-producer. Actually such breakfasts contain inadmissible amounts of salt and sugar. Many popular products have salt content higher than in potato chips or salted peanuts, and some of them even salter than seawater. Other products have sugar content considerably higher than in sweets."

According to Pedersen, a third of composition of products of Kellogg's brand is sugar; this index reaches 40% in Nestles products. And due to the fact that a product has practically nothing of the food value of cereals after technical processing, then it means that it is practically the same as to feed a child in the morning with candies or sugar, Pedersen considers. Parents must remember that breakfast is the most important meal of a child, that is why it must be useful, nourishing and natural.

Meantime, 20 million of children have overweight worldwide. WHO has found out that 2.3 billion people, and it makes nearly a third of the planet population, will suffer from overweight to 2015. This, in turn, will entail the growth of such diseases as diabetes, heart diseases and some types of cancer.
